Latest Times Review

I loved the latest book I reviewed for the New York Times Book Review so much that I wanted to plug it here. It's called "Because a Fire Was in My Head," by Lynn Stegner. This is the best piece of fiction I've read in a long time - a head-strong female protagonist, poetic writing, heartache - what's not to love? I can't believe big publisher hasn't swooped in to pick up Stegner and pay her lots of moola.
Here's my review.

I'm curious... why did the church excommunicate you? For no reason? Or did they find out you were writing this book?
LOVED your book. Thanks so much for sharing your story with us.
Julia- Just finished the book. Loved it. It touched me deeply. 3 questions (if I may): 1) what is your relationship with your parents now? 2) what eventually happened to Jerome? 3) have you ever confronted any of your "captors" as an adult?

Hey Julia! I stayed up till the weee hours this morning finishing 'Jesus Land'. What an awesome read! I also would love to know the answers to the 3 questions posted in the comment before mine.
I wish I could have met David.
Hello Juila. I'm an English Professor and my Nonfiction class is reading Jesus Land. I've asked my students to participate in this blog, yet I've had some difficultly posting, so this is a test run.
It's Professor Richard-Lany again. I read Jesus Land over the Christmas Break of 2007 and decided it would be a perfect memoir length text for my Non-fiction course. Thus far, my students have responded well to the book and have come to really sympathize with you and David. This blog is a great opportunity for my students to pose questions about the text and connect with others who have been moved by your account. Of course, I've given the incentive of extra credit to urge participation. Your website is an excellent resource for my students. They have gotten a kick out of the recipes, and the supporting docs and pictures have made reading this book as a class a richer experience. It's rare that an author give such access to readers. Thanks again for such a thoughtful, candid memoir.
Julia: Just finished reading Jesus Land. My friend, Lance, drowned at Escuela Caribe on June 4, 1989. You talk about many of the same things that he wrote to me about. I still have those letters, it is obvious that he is keeping things cheery. Your book brought back many of the good memories we had before he left for Escuela Caribe. Thank you for writing the book. It was very well written. You have my condolences on the loss of David,
Julia:
I loved your book Jesus Land. I had a friend, Lance, that went to Escuela Caribe in 1989. He died in a flash flood while swimming with his housemates on June 4, 1989. Your book took me back to my senior year in high school and all the fun times we had before he left for the school. Thank you for writing this book. It was well written.
