Swats abolished!
Due to pressure from alumni to stop physical abuse at New Horizon facilities, the board of directors apparently voted at the end of September to stop the humiliating practice of spanking its teenage charges. Now if they'd just abolish body slams, hire qualified staff, and address students' emotional problems instead of coercing them to pretend to conform to the program's rules while being further damaged by the futile policy of "behavioral modification."

I too grew up in a fundaMENTAList religion. It took years to realize that due to its spiritual abusiveness I became a shame addict. I also realized that fundaMENTALists intuitions must preach their shame, hate, and fear in order to keep 'the flock' addicted to coming back every Sunday for their weekly dose of shame. By doing so, the church can prey on the 'the flocks' pocket books in order for the intuitions of fundaMENTALism survive, a very demented sick cycle of survival.
I have been saying since the early 80s that the 'religious-riot' is Christian fascist and as we all know fascist are nothing but bully cowards!

I saw your book at a bookstore today and I saw it was about Indiana so I picked it up. Little did I know that it would be about my hometown. I am a black woman living in NY who graduated from WLHS in '92. I moved to West Lafayette when I was in 10th grade and it was such a culture shock. Almost all of the black kids in my school (and there were very few) were adopted by white families. Thank you so much for writing your story!
