Regulation of overseas boot camps
A California congressman is pushing the federal government to regulate overseas teen boot camps like Escuela Caribe. I think it's a damn good idea - long overdue, given the track record of abuse at these places. These camps are located in foreign precisely to avoid government oversight, but it's time they were held accountable for actions harming American kids.

This regulation, as you say, is long overdue, but I have my doubts about how it will be passed.
Unfortunately, I think there are plenty of congressmen and women who know, or have an inkling of knowledge of the abuses that occur at these camps, but feel it is for the public good (somehow).
I have to say that I've just finished Jesus Land and I think it is one of the better books I've read this year. Kudos to you, and fight the good fight!
The problem is that they're located overseas for a reason - to escape U.S. government oversight. There is no quality control relating to educational, living, or treatment standards. I think these overseas bootcamps should all be shut down, period, as well as many of the camps on the mainland that have a history of documented abuses.
It's just terrible. I have a friend who wanted to be employed with the Escuela Caribe. But tonight she started looking on the forums and reading really disturbing things. I feel so bad for the kids that have to be put through this. Most of the time kids are sent to these places because their parents can't handle them or the have disorders. This has to stop.
